Synopsis
“Trouble in Paradise” investigates the controversial energy ambitions of Belize, revealing a fight for the country’s natural and national resources from hydroelectric power to newly discovered high-grade oil, ecotourism to Mayan land rights. From the Lord Chief Justice of Belize and the Minister for Development to independent tour operators and Mayan land owners, “Belize: Trouble in Paradise” sheds light on a developing country at a time of huge political change, struggling to industrialise and modernise, whilst retaining its unique cultural and ecological heritage.
Directed by Matt Milloy, produced by Sarah Tierney, filmed by Sarah Brodbin and edited by Matthew Murdoch, the film was awarded the CBA/DFID Programme Development Grant 2007. An extended version of “Trouble in Paradise” is currently in post-production.
